Rebecca E Smith

Rebecca E Smith is the founder, designer and maker of Smith & Gibb, a jewellery adventure inspired by her grandparents, Trevor Smith & Margaret Gibb. Rebecca marries family sentiment with contemporary designs from her workshop based in Glasgow.

Graduating in 2014 with a first class honours degree in Jewellery and Metal Design at Duncan of Jordanstone Dundee, Rebecca E Smith is continuing her love of designing and making jewellery under the name Smith & Gibb. .

After discovering over 300 love letters sent during WWII from her Granddad to her Grandmother, Rebecca E Smith has been captivated by the sentiment, the nostalgia and the greatness of a true love story over the years of 1943-1946.

Perhaps seen as a dated way of communicating compared to text message and email, we are unable to express ourselves the same way a hand written letter can. These personal artifacts have highlighted how significant sending a letter can be and how life changing these letters were that she invites the public to write a letter when displaying her work at craft fairs or exhibitions.

Truly inspired by her Grandparents story, she creates sentimental one off jewellery pieces capturing the original handwriting, old photographs and vintage colours through the traditional process of enamelling. Some of her special pieces have handwriting from love letters etched into the enamel as well as photographs. The collection is ever evolving with the discoveries she uncovers whilst reading the letters.
